The SGI O2® Visual Workstation integrates high-quality graphics and powerful processing with built-in video in an affordable entry-level UNIX® system. SGI sought a fool-proof drive ejector mechanism that would complement the sleek design.

Function Engineering designed a novel lever-operated system that seats the drive connector and locks the drive into place. Pulling down on the handle extracts the drive for easy pullout. The computer won an Industrial Design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America. The extraction mechanism was awarded patent 5,790,373.
