The SGI 320TM Visual Workstation was a breakthrough product that received top honors of excellence from multiple sources. Its computing innovations were complemented by innovations in case and chassis design.
Function Engineering designed the entire hardware enclosure including case plastics, internal chassis and expansion card system. A dampened motion front door retracts to reveal the drive bay. The curved case removes easily for service access. The product was awarded patents 6,132,019 for the door mechanism and D431,242 for design.
