Hose reels and cord reels are notoriously problematic. Swivel joints must seal under pressure, windings must not tangle, and the operation must out-perform rolling a hose or cord by hand.
Function Engineering helped design a unique motorized wheel mechanism and plastic case for the hose and cord reel products. An inventive reversing spiral approach collects the hose or cord inside the case without tangle. Consumer safety requirements were also met. The design received an Industrial Design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America.
