Dell, the world's leading supplier of computers, needed to create a desktop computer specifically tailored for the Japanese market. Dell decided to repackage an existing chassis with new plastic skins styled to appeal to Japanese consumers. The industrial design featured a bi-stable door that cleanly covered the front panel.

Function analyzed, designed, and tested the bi-stable mechanism that holds the door both open and closed. To protect the hinges, in case the door is inadvertently torqued beyond its intended range of motion, the door sports breakaway features that release automatically. The plastic skins were designed to meet Dell's exacting cosmetic, tolerance, and production standards.
